Overview:
The City of Edmonton is installing the Ritchie Vision Zero Street Lab project to enhance street safety, informed by community feedback from May 2023. The initiative targets issues like speeding, crosswalk safety, and traffic management.
Key Changes:
Curb extensions: added at several locations to improve pedestrian visibility and slow down vehicles.
Centre medians: installed at key intersections to reduce shortcutting, lower traffic volumes, and increase crosswalk safety.
Two-stage crossing: implemented at 76 Avenue and 97 Street to improve pedestrian safety and visibility.
Speed humps: placed in various areas to reduce traffic volume and speed.
Adaptive sidewalks: a one-year pilot on 78 Avenue to enhance pedestrian safety and visibility.
Vibrant crosswalks: featuring designs from the winners of our spring contest to improve safety and add community creativity.
Installation Timeline:
Most installations will be completed by the end of July 2024.
Measures for 97 Street and 82 Avenue, including a half signal with bike detection, will be completed by the end of 2024.
