Bike challenge halfway to NEW 100,000 km goal

Week 2 Totals

Midway through June and city cyclists participating in our community league bike-off have logged 52,684 km. That’s far more than we ever dreamed members would ride.

“When we started out, we just wanted members to feel part of a group effort while having fun on their own and getting outside after months in lockdown,” says Dan Tyrkalo, Ritchie’s director of events. The committee thought 1922 km (the year Ritchie Community League was founded) would be an attainable goal. In just two weeks, Ritchie members have ridden 8,925 km. Wow!

“Then we asked Hazeldean and Strathcona if they wanted a little friendly competition and the idea took off.”
There are now 19 leagues involved, each reporting its collective total weekly. The competition runs until the end of June.

“We’ve changed the goal. Now we want to reach 100,000 km and we want the whole city to help us get there.”

Participate by recording your kilometres one of two ways:

  1. Automatically record your bike travel via the Strava app by joining your league’s club (see below).  Ritchie join: https://www.strava.com/clubs/ritchie-united-670834 or e-mail kms: ritchie-united@ritchie-league.com. (E-mail weekly, by Sunday night.)

  2. Manually record your own kilometres and e-mail them to your league contact.

Only kilometres biked in the month of June count towards the total.
